Soak the dried navy beans overnight in water.

Drain and rinse the soaked beans.

In a large pot, combine the beans, chopped onion, minced garlic cloves, vegetable broth, tomato paste, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt, black pepper, and bay leaf.

Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 2 hours, or until the beans are tender.
