Rinse the lentils under running water until the water runs clear.

In a large saucepan, add the lentils and water. Bring to a boil and then reduce the heat to low. Simmer for 20 minutes or until the lentils are soft and cooked.

In a separate pan, heat the cooking oil. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.

Add chopped onion, garlic, and ginger. Saute until the onion turns golden brown.

Add chopped tomato, turmeric powder, coriander powder, red chili powder, and salt. Cook until the tomatoes are soft and mushy.

Add the cooked lentils to the pan and mix well. Simmer for 5 minutes.

Add garam masala powder, fresh cilantro, and lemon juice. Mix well.

Remove from heat and let it rest for 5 minutes.

Serve hot with rice or naan bread.
