Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.

Add chopped onion and minced garlic, sauté until translucent.

Stir in tomato paste and cook for 2 minutes.

Add crushed tomatoes, dried basil, dried oregano, salt, sugar, black pepper, and red pepper flakes.

Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low and let it cook for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Remove from heat and let it rest for 10 minutes.

Stir in fresh basil leaves.
