Rinse the lentils with water and drain.

In a large pot, add the lentils and water. Bring to a boil and then reduce heat to simmer for 15 minutes or until lentils are tender.

In a separate pan, heat vegetable oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and cook until they start to splutter.

Add chopped onion, garlic, and ginger to the pan. Sauté until onion becomes translucent.

Add chopped tomato and cook until it softens.

Add turmeric powder, coriander powder, garam masala, and salt. Mix well.

Add the cooked lentils to the pan and mix everything together.

Simmer for 10 minutes to allow the flavors to blend.

Garnish with fresh cilantro and drizzle with lemon juice.

Serve hot with rice or naan bread.
