Sloppy Joes were originally called ‘loose meat sandwiches’ and were created by a cook named Joe in Sioux City, Iowa in the early 20th century.

  1. In a bowl, rehydrate the TVP with hot water according to package instructions.
  2. In a large skillet, sauté the onion, garlic, and bell pepper until softened.
  3. Add the rehydrated TVP to the skillet and cook for 5 minutes.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix together the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, chili powder, paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper.
  5. Pour the sauce mixture into the skillet with the TVP and vegetables. Stir well to combine.
  6. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the mixture thickens.
  7. While the mixture simmers, lightly toast the hamburger buns.
  8. Serve the TVP vegan sloppy joe mixture on the toasted buns.
