Peel the plantains and cut them into 1-inch thick slices.

Heat the vegetable oil in a deep frying pan.

Fry the plantain slices until golden brown, about 3 minutes per side.

Remove the plantains from the pan and place them on a paper towel to drain excess oil.

Using a tostonera or the bottom of a glass, flatten the plantain slices to about 1/4-inch thickness.

Return the flattened plantains to the pan and fry for an additional 2 minutes per side.

Remove from the pan and sprinkle with salt and garlic powder.

Serve hot with salsa.
