Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear.

Heat vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat.

Add cumin seeds, cinnamon stick, cardamom pods, cloves, and bay leaf. Cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

Add chopped onion, garlic, and ginger. Cook until the onion turns translucent.

Add the rinsed rice and salt. Stir well to coat the rice with the spices.

Add water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes until the rice is cooked and the water is absorbed.
