Rinse the rice and lentils separately.

In a large pot, heat olive oil over medium heat and sauté the onion until translucent.

Add cumin, salt, and black pepper to the pot and cook for another minute.

Add the rice, lentils, and water to the pot and bring to a boil.

Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 20-25 minutes or until the rice and lentils are cooked and the water is absorbed.

Remove the pot from heat and let it rest for 5 minutes.

Fluff the rice and lentils with a fork before serving.
