Rinse the dried split peas and set aside.

In a large pot, sauté the onion, carrots, celery, and garlic until softened.

Add the bay leaves, thyme, vegetable broth, salt, black pepper, smoked ham hock, and water to the pot.

Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 1 hour, or until the peas are tender.

Remove the ham hock from the pot and shred the meat. Discard the bone and fat.

Return the shredded meat to the pot and simmer for an additional 10 minutes.
