  1. Heat olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add chopped onion and minced garlic, and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  2. Add red pepper flakes, dried oregano, salt, and sugar. Stir well.
  3. Pour in the canned tomatoes and bring to a simmer. Cook for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in torn basil leaves.
  5. Serve the zesty tomato sauce over cooked pasta or use as a base for pizza or other dishes.
  6. Sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese before serving.
