Hot cross buns are traditionally eaten on Good Friday in many countries as a symbol of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
This is vegan recipe. Dish can be prepared in 110 minutes. Recipe requires some culinary experience (medium difficulty). Number of ingredients: 16.

In a small bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and 1 teaspoon of sugar. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.

In a large mixing bowl, combine plant-based milk, remaining sugar, vegetable oil, and vinegar. Mix well.

In a separate bowl, whisk together gluten-free all-purpose flour blend, xanthan gum, baking powder, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and ground allspice.

Add the yeast mixture, dried mixed fruit, and orange zest to the milk mixture. Mix well.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, stirring until a sticky dough forms.

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for 5 minutes until smooth.

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour.

Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.

Divide the dough into 12 equal portions and shape each portion into a ball.

Place the balls on the prepared baking tray, leaving space between each bun.

In a small bowl, mix together icing sugar and water to make a thick paste.

Use a piping bag or a small plastic bag with the corner snipped off to pipe a cross on top of each bun.

Bake for 20 minutes until golden brown.

Remove from the oven and let the buns cool on a wire rack.

Serve warm or at room temperature.
