Rinse and drain the black beans.

In a large bowl, mash the black beans with a fork or potato masher.

Finely chop the red bell pepper, red onion, garlic cloves, and jalapeno pepper.

Add the chopped vegetables, cornmeal, breadcrumbs, chili powder, cumin, salt, and black pepper to the bowl with the mashed black beans. Mix well.

Shape the mixture into 4 patties.

Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.

Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side, until golden brown.

Toast the hamburger buns.

Assemble the burgers by placing a patty on each bun, topping with lettuce, tomato slices, and avocado slices.
