Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).

Cut the tomatoes in half and place them on a baking sheet. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper.

Roast the tomatoes in the oven for 30-35 minutes, or until they are soft and slightly charred.

In a large pot, heat some olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and sauté until they are soft and translucent.

Add the roasted tomatoes and vegetable broth to the pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes.

Use an immersion blender or a regular blender to puree the soup until smooth.

Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Serve the soup hot, garnished with fresh basil leaves.
