  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Cut the tomatoes in half and place them on a baking sheet.
  3. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and black pepper.
  4. Roast in the oven for 30-40 minutes, or until the tomatoes are soft and slightly caramelized.
  5. In a large pot, heat olive oil over medium heat.
  6. Add the onion and garlic, and sauté until translucent.
  7. Add the roasted tomatoes and vegetable broth.
  8. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
  9. Use an immersion blender or regular blender to puree the soup until smooth.
  10. Season with additional salt and pepper to taste.
  11. Serve hot, garnished with fresh basil.
