Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add diced onions and minced garlic, sauté until onions are translucent.

Add tomatoes, tomato paste, vegetable stock, basil, salt, black pepper, and sugar to the pot. Stir well.

Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes.

Remove the pot from heat and let it cool slightly. Use an immersion blender or regular blender to puree the soup until smooth.

Return the pot to heat and simmer for another 10 minutes.

Serve hot and garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired.
