Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add chopped onion and minced garlic, and sauté until translucent.

Add tomatoes, vegetable broth, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes.

Use an immersion blender or transfer the soup to a blender to puree until smooth.

Return the soup to the pot and stir in basil leaves. Simmer for an additional 5 minutes.

Serve hot, garnished with a drizzle of cream and additional basil leaves if desired.
