  1. Soak the black-eyed peas overnight in water.
  2. Drain and rinse the black-eyed peas.
  3. In a large pot, add the black-eyed peas and cover with water. Bring to a boil and cook for 10 minutes.
  4. In the meantime, heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic. Sauté until the onion is translucent.
  5. Drain the black-eyed peas and transfer them to the skillet with the sautéed onion and garlic.
  6. Add barbecue sauce, salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, and cayenne pepper. Stir well to combine.
  7. Transfer the mixture to a preheated grill or smoker. Cook for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  8. Remove from the grill or smoker and let it rest for 5 minutes.
  9. Drizzle with lemon juice before serving.
