  3. Add the onion and garlic to the saucepan and cook until softened.
  4. Add the turmeric powder, cumin powder, cardamom pods, cinnamon stick, and bay leaf to the saucepan. Cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly.
  5. Add the rinsed rice to the saucepan and stir to coat it with the spices.
  6. Add the water and salt to the saucepan and bring to a boil.
  7. Reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan, and let the rice simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the rice is cooked and the liquid is absorbed.
  8. Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the rice rest for 5 minutes.
  9. Fluff the rice with a fork before serving.
