Rinse and soak the black beans overnight.

In a large pot, sauté the onion, garlic, and bell pepper until softened.

Add the soaked black beans, cumin powder, oregano, bay leaf, and vegetable broth to the pot.

Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 1 hour or until the beans are tender.

Remove the bay leaf and blend half of the soup until smooth.

Return the blended soup to the pot and stir in lime juice, salt, and black pepper.

Serve hot, garnished with cilantro, avocado slices, and a dollop of sour cream.
