Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear.

Heat oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add cumin seeds, cinnamon stick, and bay leaf. Cook until fragrant.

Add chopped onion, garlic, and ginger. Sauté until the onion is translucent.

Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Stir well.

Add frozen peas and cook for 2 minutes.

Add the rinsed rice and stir to coat it with the spices.

Add water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes or until the rice is cooked and the water is absorbed.

Remove from heat and let it rest for 5 minutes.

Fluff the rice with a fork before serving.
