Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add chopped onion and minced garlic, and cook until onion becomes translucent.

Add tomatoes, vegetable broth, salt, black pepper, and sugar to the pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes.

Use an immersion blender or transfer the soup to a blender to puree until smooth.

Return the soup to the pot and stir in fresh basil leaves. Simmer for an additional 5 minutes.

Optional: Stir in heavy cream for a creamier texture.
