In a large pot, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add onion, garlic, carrots, and celery. Cook until vegetables are softened.

Add chestnuts, lentils, vegetable broth, tomato paste, thyme, bay leaves, salt, and pepper to the pot. Bring to a boil.

Reduce heat to low, cover the pot, and simmer for 40 minutes or until lentils are tender.

Remove bay leaves and serve hot.
