In a large pot, combine the rice, coconut milk, water, salt, sugar, turmeric powder, cinnamon stick, cloves, cardamom pods, and bay leaf.

Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat.

Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let the rice simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the liquid is absorbed.

Remove the pot from the heat and let the rice rest for 5 minutes.
