Rinse the lentils and rice separately.

In a large pot, heat oil and sauté onions, garlic, ginger, and green chili until golden brown.

Add turmeric powder, cumin powder, coriander powder, red chili powder, and garam masala. Stir well.

Add lentils, rice, salt, and water. Bring to a boil.

Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 20 minutes or until lentils and rice are cooked.

Let it rest for 5 minutes before fluffing with a fork.

Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve hot.
