Benne wafers are a traditional Southern cookie made with sesame seeds, which were brought to the region by African slaves.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking powder. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until well combined.
  5. Roll the dough into small balls, about 1 inch in diameter. Roll each ball in the sesame seeds, making sure to coat them evenly.
  6. Place the coated balls onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart. Flatten each ball slightly with the back of a spoon.
  7. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown.
  8. Remove from the oven and let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
