Peel and cut the purple yam into small cubes.

In a pot, boil the purple yam until tender.

Drain and let it cool.

In a blender, blend the cooked purple yam with coconut milk until smooth.

In a separate bowl, dissolve cornstarch in water.

In a saucepan, combine the blended purple yam mixture, sugar, and cornstarch mixture.

Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens.

Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
