Rinse the lentils and set aside.

In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat.

Add the onion, garlic, and ginger. Sauté until the onion is translucent.

Add the berbere spice mix and tomato paste. Stir well to combine.

Add the lentils and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 30-40 minutes, or until the lentils are tender.
