Rinse the lentils and rice separately.

In a large pot, sauté the onion in olive oil until golden brown.

Add the cumin, salt, and black pepper to the pot and stir for a minute.

Add the lentils, rice, and water to the pot and bring to a boil.

Reduce the heat, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 30 minutes or until the lentils and rice are cooked.

Remove from heat and let it rest for 10 minutes.
