Rinse the lentils and rice separately.

In a large pot, bring water to a boil and cook the lentils until tender.

In a separate pot, cook the rice according to package instructions.

In a frying pan, heat olive oil and add the onions. Cook until caramelized.

Once the lentils and rice are cooked, mix them together in a serving dish.

Add cumin, salt, and black pepper to the lentil-rice mixture and mix well.

Top with caramelized onions.
