Rinse the split peas under cold water.

In a large pot, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onions, carrots, celery, and minced garlic. Cook until vegetables are tender.

Add split peas, vegetable broth, bay leaf, liquid smoke, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper to the pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 1 hour or until split peas are soft.

Remove the bay leaf and blend the soup until smooth using an immersion blender or regular blender.

Return the soup to the pot and heat for a few minutes. Adjust seasoning if needed.

Serve the soup hot, garnished with fresh parsley.
