Rinse and drain the black beans.

In a large pot, heat some olive oil over medium heat.

Add the onion and garlic cloves, cook until softened.

Add the red bell pepper, carrot, and celery stalk, cook for a few more minutes.

Stir in the black beans, vegetable broth, diced tomatoes, cumin, chili powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper.

Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for 20-25 minutes.

Using an immersion blender or a regular blender, blend about half of the soup until smooth. You can also leave it partially blended for a chunkier texture.

Stir in the lime juice and fresh cilantro.

Serve the soup hot, topped with diced avocado and crushed tortilla chips.
