  1. Wash and dry the okra. Cut off the stems and slice the okra into 1/2-inch thick rounds.
  2. In a bowl, combine the cornmeal, flour, salt, black pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper.
  3. Dip the okra slices into the buttermilk, then coat them in the cornmeal mixture.
  4. Heat the vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Fry the okra in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  5. Remove the fried okra from the skillet and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  6. Serve hot as an appetizer or side dish.
