Rinse the lentils and set aside.

Heat oil in a large pot and sauté the onions, garlic, and ginger until fragrant.

Add the tomatoes and cook until they soften.

Stir in the turmeric powder, cumin powder, coriander powder, chili powder, and salt.

Add the lentils and water, bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes or until the lentils are cooked.

Use an immersion blender to partially blend the soup for a thicker consistency.

Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and lemon juice before serving.
