Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear.

In a large pot, heat the ghee over medium heat. Add the cardamom pods, cinnamon stick, cloves, and bay leaf. Cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

Add the chopped onion, ginger, and garlic to the pot. Cook until the onion is translucent.

Add the turmeric powder and salt. Stir well.

Add the rinsed basmati rice to the pot and stir to coat the rice with the spices.

Add water and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes until the rice is cooked and the liquid is absorbed.

Remove from heat and let it rest for 5 minutes.

Fluff the rice with a fork before serving.
