Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear.

In a large pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onions and cook until softened.

Add the turmeric, cinnamon sticks, and cardamom pods to the pot and cook for 1 minute, stirring continuously.

Add the rinsed rice to the pot and stir to coat it with the spices.

Pour in the water and add the salt. Bring to a boil.

Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let the rice simmer for 15 minutes.

After 15 minutes, remove the pot from the heat and let it rest, covered, for 10 minutes.

Fluff the rice with a fork and remove the cinnamon sticks and cardamom pods.

Stir in the raisins.
