Bootlegger Beans got their name during the Prohibition era when people would cook beans with alcohol to mask the taste of homemade alcohol.

  1. Rinse the pinto beans and soak them in water overnight.
  2. Drain the beans and rinse again.
  3. In a large pot, sauté the onion and garlic until translucent.
  4. Add the soaked beans, tomato sauce, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, liquid smoke, salt, black pepper, and water to the pot.
  5. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for about 1 hour or until the beans are tender.
  6. Remove from heat and let it rest for 10 minutes before serving.
  7. Serve hot with rice or cornbread.
