Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a muffin tin with paper liners.

In a large bowl, mash the ripe bananas until smooth.

Add the whole wheat flour, oats, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt to the bowl. Mix well.

Add the unsweetened applesauce, maple syrup, and vanilla extract to the bowl. Stir until all the ingredients are combined.

Fold in the chopped walnuts.

Divide the batter evenly among the muffin cups.

Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a muffin comes out clean.

Remove from the oven and let the muffins cool in the tin for 5 minutes. Then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
