Calzones originated in Naples, Italy and are often referred to as ‘folded pizza’. They were traditionally made with meat and cheese fillings, but this vegan version offers a delicious plant-based twist.

This is vegan and high protein recipe. Dish can be prepared in 65 minutes. Recipe requires some culinary experience (medium difficulty). Number of ingredients: 12.

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a pan, heat olive oil and sauté the bell peppers, onion, mushrooms, and spinach until tender.
  3. Roll out the pizza dough and cut it into 4 equal-sized pieces.
  4. Spread marinara sauce on one half of each dough piece, leaving a border around the edges.
  5. Top the sauce with the sautéed vegetables and vegan cheese.
  6. Fold the other half of the dough over the filling and press the edges to seal.
  7. Place the calzones on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  8. Brush the tops with olive oil and sprinkle with garlic powder, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper.
  9. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
  10. Allow the calzones to rest for 10 minutes before serving.
