Rinse the red lentils under cold water.

In a large pot, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, carrot, and potato. Cook until vegetables are tender, about 5 minutes.

Add the tomato paste, cumin, salt, and black pepper. Stir well.

Add the red lentils and water to the pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes or until lentils are cooked through.

Use an immersion blender or a regular blender to puree the soup until smooth.
