  1. Wash the toor dal thoroughly and soak it in water for 30 minutes.
  2. In a pressure cooker, add the soaked toor dal, water, turmeric powder, chopped onion, tomato, green chili, ginger, and garlic. Cook for 4-5 whistles.
  3. Once the pressure is released, open the cooker and mash the dal lightly.
  4. In a separate pan, heat oil and add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, asafoetida, and curry leaves. Let them splutter.
  5. Add the cooked dal to the pan and mix well. Simmer for 5 minutes.
  6. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or roti.
