In a large pot, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and minced garlic, and sauté until onion is translucent.

Add diced tomatoes, black beans, barley, vegetable broth, lime juice, salt, black pepper, cumin powder, and paprika. Stir well.

Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 25-30 minutes, or until barley is cooked.

While the soup is simmering, prepare the salad. In a bowl, combine diced avocado, cilantro, lime juice, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.
