Rinse the split peas and set aside.

Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.

Add onion, carrot, celery, and garlic. Cook until vegetables are softened.

Add split peas, vegetable broth, bay leaves, thyme, salt, and black pepper to the pot.

Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 1 hour, or until split peas are tender.
