Heat vegetable oil in a large pan over medium heat.

Add cumin seeds, cinnamon stick, and bay leaf to the pan and sauté for 1 minute.

Add chopped onion and minced garlic to the pan and sauté until the onion is translucent.

Add coriander powder, turmeric powder, and salt to the pan and cook for 1 minute.

Add the rinsed basmati rice to the pan and stir well to coat the rice with the spices.

Pour water into the pan and bring it to a boil.

Reduce the heat to low, cover the pan, and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes or until the rice is cooked and the water is absorbed.
