  1. Rinse and drain the black beans.
  2. In a large pot, sauté the onion, garlic, red bell pepper, and jalapeno pepper until softened.
  3. Add the cumin powder and chili powder to the pot and cook for another minute.
  4. Add the black beans, vegetable stock, and tomato paste to the pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes.
  5. Use an immersion blender or transfer a portion of the soup to a blender and blend until smooth. Return the blended soup to the pot.
  6. Stir in lime juice and salt. Cook for an additional 5 minutes.
  7. Serve the soup hot, garnished with cilantro, avocado slices, and crushed tortilla chips.
