Rinse the split peas and set aside.

In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat.

Add the onion, carrots, celery, and garlic. Sauté until the vegetables are tender.

Add the caraway seeds and cook for another minute.

Add the split peas, vegetable broth, bay leaf, salt, and black pepper to the pot.

Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 1 hour or until the split peas are soft.

Remove the bay leaf and use an immersion blender to puree the soup until smooth.

Stir in the lemon juice.
