Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.

Add the tomatoes, vegetable broth, salt, black pepper, and sugar. Bring to a boil and then reduce the heat to low. Simmer for 20-25 minutes.

Remove the pot from heat and let it cool slightly. Use an immersion blender to puree the soup until smooth.

Return the pot to the stove and heat over low heat. Stir in the fresh basil leaves and cook for another 5 minutes.

If desired, stir in the heavy cream for a creamier soup. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes.
