  1. Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear.
  2. In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the onion, bay leaf, cloves, and cardamom pods. Sauté until the onion is translucent.
  3. Add the turmeric powder, cinnamon stick, and raisins to the pot. Stir well.
  4. Add the rinsed rice and salt to the pot. Stir until the rice is coated in the spices.
  5. Pour in the water and bring to a boil.
  6. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let the rice simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the rice is cooked and the water is absorbed.
  7. Remove the pot from heat and let it rest, covered, for 5 minutes.
  8. Fluff the rice with a fork before serving.
