  1. Drain and rinse the black beans.
  2. In a large bowl, mash the black beans with a fork until mostly smooth.
  3. Finely chop the red bell pepper, red onion, and garlic cloves.
  4. Add the chopped vegetables, cornmeal, chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, salt, black pepper, and breadcrumbs to the bowl with the mashed black beans. Mix well to combine.
  5. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each portion into a burger patty.
  6. Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Cook the burgers for about 4-5 minutes on each side, until browned and crispy.
  7. Toast the hamburger buns if desired.
  8. Assemble the burgers by placing a lettuce leaf, tomato slice, and avocado on each bun. Add the black bean burger patty and serve.
