Ingredients
  • 0.5 cup Toor dal
  • 1 medium Onion
  • 1 medium Tomato
  • 2 count Green chili
  • 1 sprig Curry leaves
  • 1 tablespoon Tamarind paste
  • 0.5 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • 1 tablespoon Sambar powder
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin seeds
  • 1 pinch Asafoetida
  • 2 tablespoon Oil
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 4 cups Water
Instructions
  1. Pressure cook the toor dal with 2 cups of water until soft and mushy.
  2. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. Once they crackle, add cumin seeds, asafoetida, and curry leaves.
  3. Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
  4. Add chopped tomatoes, green chilies, and sauté until tomatoes are soft.
  5. Add turmeric powder, sambar powder, and salt. Mix well.
  6. Add tamarind paste and cook for a minute.
  7. Add cooked dal to the pan and mix well. If needed, add additional water to adjust the consistency.
  8. Bring the sambaar to a boil and let it simmer for 10 minutes.
  9. Serve hot with rice or idli.
