Ingredients
  • 1 cup Toor Dal
  • 4 cups Water
  • 1 tablespoon Tamarind
  • 1 teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Red Chili Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 2 tablespoon Oil
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard Seeds
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin Seeds
  • 1 pinch Asafoetida
  • 1 sprig Curry Leaves
  • 2 chopped Green Chilies
  • 4 cloves Garlic
  • 1 inch Ginger
  • for garnishing Coriander Leaves
Instructions
  1. Wash the toor dal and soak it in water for 30 minutes.
  2. In a pressure cooker, add the soaked dal, water, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt.
  3. Pressure cook for 3-4 whistles or until the dal is cooked and soft.
  4. Once the pressure is released, open the cooker and mash the dal using a whisk or spoon.
  5. In a separate bowl, soak tamarind in warm water for 10 minutes. Squeeze out the pulp and discard the seeds.
  6. Add the tamarind pulp to the cooked dal and mix well.
  7. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. Let them splutter.
  8. Add cumin seeds, asafoetida, curry leaves, green chilies, garlic, and ginger. Saute until the garlic turns golden brown.
  9. Pour this tempering over the dal and mix well.
  10. Cook the dal on low heat for 5 minutes to allow the flavors to blend.
  11. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or roti.
